Great Tips for Grocery Shopping on a Budget

Grocery Stores are Designed with a Purpose

Grocery stores are cleverly designed to sell numerous items as quickly and as efficiently as possible which can lead to a lot of unnecessary products making their way into your cart.

In fact, shopping at the grocery store while on a strict budget can be a somewhat overwhelming experience. However, it doesn’t have to be a negative ordeal and can be accomplished in a quick and easy manner.

Tips for Grocery Shopping on a Budget

Here are a few tips and helpful hints that can help you to reduce your grocery shopping anxiety, prevent impulse purchases and keep your budget in tact.

1. Avoid going to the grocery store on an empty stomach. Your hunger can influence your purchasing decisions and result in the unnecessary and unhealthy purchase of food items.

2. Plan all of your family’s meals in advance. Before going to the grocery store make a list of specific items that you will need and stick to the list.

3. Use cash when shopping for groceries. Leave your credit card at home and keep a close eye on the cost of each item in your grocery cart.

4. Clip coupons and look for sales. Make sure only invest in sales items that your family will eat. It doesn’t matter how impressive the sales price is if your family does not eat the product.

5. Do not buy pre-packaged or pre-measured food items such as pudding, produce, yogurt, cheese slices or juice boxes. Instead purchase items that are fresh or in bulk and take the time at home to wash, measure, slice and store the food.

6. Buy plain cuts of meat, fish and poultry rather than the pre-seasoned or pre-cooked versions. Prepare, season, cut and cook your meat, fish and poultry at home.

7. Buy frozen produce such as peas, corn, carrots, beans etc. These items keep well in the freezer and are just as nutritious as their fresh counterparts.

8. Choose your grocery store with care. Local supermarkets have lower and more competitive prices as compared to large national shopping chains. In fact many of the national shopping chains that sell groceries charge much more than their local counterparts.
